u9's Finish In Style

On what i think were our last matches of the season, Janesboro decided not to turn up, so as both Newport and ourselves had enough for two teams, we split and mixed the players up and played away between ourselves.

The Corbally Red Team team had a tough encounter against Newport Reds, and in what turned out to be a very open match, it was once again left to what have to be the two best keepers at this age group, to put in a great display of goalkeeping and deny the strikers from both teams. the 2-2 scoreline was probably the correct one as the teams were very evenly matched throughout.

The Corbally Green Team were in great form and had a very exciting match which flowed from end to end, with both sides in the running to win this match, but it was Corbally who came out on top with a 4-3 scoreline, with goals from Stephen Clien (2), Connor Beck, and Cian Cremmins, all in all a great way to finish of the season, which has been very competitive, with the standard of the teams on display very high.

Corbally U8's Star in Mungret

Corbally blue u8’s were at Mungret FC for a blitz with a difference.  Lisnagry failed to show up so for each game 3 random players were taken from Corbally, Mungret and Aisling to makeup a 4th team.

Here is how it went....

Corbally 1 Aisling Annacotty 1

Conor Leahy, Kieran Ryan and Ryan Lynch were selected for ‘Made-Up Utd’ and Corbally found it hard without them.  Aisling were on top for most of this game.  Our defence of Dean Callinan, Ben Greney and Cian Ryan kept us in the game.  Aisling scored early and Cilian O’Brien in goals made some great saves to keep Corbally in the game.  John Cassidy scored the Corbally equaliser and after this Luke Walsh, Conor Hanley and Eoin Hernandez tried hard for a winner but a draw was a fair result.

Corbally 1 ‘Made-Up Utd’ 3

When is football a funny old game?  When some of our best players get selected to play against you and score winning goals!!  Kieran Ryan, Cian Ryan and Ben Greaney played against their Corbally teammates and all played excellently.  Our defence of Fionn O’Regan, Conor Leahy and Ryan Lynch struggled to cope with Ben Greaney and he scored early in the game.  Corbally fought very hard to get back into the game.  A goal from Luke Walsh just before half-time set up a great 2nd half.  Corbally controlled the 2ndhalf, playing some great football.  Ryan Healy, Cillian O’Brien and Eoin Hernandez set up great chances for the 2 Lukes, Walsh and O’Donnell.  Unfortunately, last ditch tackles, goal line clearances and some great saves prevented us scoring.  The twist to the game came late on when our own Ben Greaney scored another and with help from Cian and Kieran Ryan, ‘Made-Up Utd’ won out.

Corbally 0 Mungret 5

Key players Eoin Hernandez, John Cassidy and Cian Ryan played with ‘Made-Up Utd’.  Ben Greaney and Conor Hanley had to go off injured – Ben should have been given a penalty.  One own-goal and some great Mungret play left Corbally with their biggest loss this year.  It was still great to see how Corbally responded to going behind.  They never gave up.  Dean Callinan, Ryan Lynch, Cilian O’Brien and Conor Leahy all did their best but it was just one of those games!

The next blitz and a chance to finish the season on a winning note can’t come soon enough!!

U7's Impressive Performance

In glorious weather on Saturday, Corbally 1 U7s hosted the latest leg of the Blitz league at Athlunkard. First up were Caherdavin Celtic with a very strong side. Corbally were very slow to get into the game and were down 3-0 by half time. With some changes at half time we came out strong and defended very well with Louis Mc Cormack making some crucial saves in goals, assisted by Central Defenders Adam Prenderville and Michael McEvoy. There was non stop pressure on the Caherdavin goal, with Caherdavin giving away handball in the box from a Tom Collins corner. Scott Kirwan stood up for the penalty and nearly took the net off with one of his trademark rocket shots. Unfortunately time ran out and the match finished up 3-1 to Caherdavin.

Next match was against Shelbourne and the taste of the previous defeat wasn't going down well with Corbally who started at a pace. Sean Connelly darted down the wing and past two Shelbourne players before putting the ball in the back of the net. This was quickly followed by a beautiful chip from Tom Collins, which looped over the keeper and just under the post. Certainly a runner for goal of the season. Sean Connelly wasn't finished though, with another goal before half time. In the second half, Nathan O'Shea, had a shot saved, then hit the post and getting the rebound but narrowingly hit the side netting. However persistence paid, with Nathan eventually getting his goal, followed by another three minutes later! Shelbourne were unable to cope with the wave after wave of attacks from the Blues. Adam Prenderville took a shot from outside the box which the keeper had no chance of getting and scored his first blitz goal. Final score to Corbally 6-0.

Last up was a very strong Pike Rovers side who had beaten Corbally 2 U7s a few weeks ago. We were determined not to let them get a clean sweep against us. It was a very even match with both sides defending well and counter attacking. Daniel Cooney opened up the account for Corbally with a great goal. Half time Corbally 1-0. In the second half Cian Conneely was unlucky to have a shot deemed saved on the line, even though the keeper was behind the line! Pike were clearly determined to get their equaliser, and it eventually came when a super shot looked to be saved by Louis Mc Cormack but was too hot to handle and just went over the line. In the last minute Pike scored again but it was disallowed as the ref had blown the whistle for a foul on Cian Conneely outside the Corbally box. Final whistle sounded shortly after, for a well deserved and hard fought draw 1-1.

Corbally 1 U7 squad on the day was: Daniel Cooney, James Lammond, Nathan O'Shea, Scott Bridges, Jacob Beck, Michael Mc Evoy, Cian Conneely, Louis McCormack, Adam Prenderville, Finn O'Shea, Sean Connelly, Tom Collins, Oleg Vysochan, Scott Kirwan. Coaches were Colm Conneely and Michael O'Shea.

U9's Too Hot for Fairview

U9 Reds Corbally 2 v Fairview 1

With temperature in the mid twenties and with a great crowd watching, the Corbally U9's Red team put on a great display of clinic football to earned their second straight win over an extremely tough Fairview side.

This match was going to be a very close and physical encounter and so it proved, but with the passing skills on display from midfield and attack it was always going to be hard for Fairview to deal with. Our first goal was a great example of this, a clearance from Gavin Duffy up to Cian Cemins who moved the ball to Jake Downey who then cut open the Fairview defence with an killer pass and Stephen Clien was there to slot the ball home, a very simple but clinical opener. Our tails were up leading up to half time and we hammered home the advantage, this time it was Stephen Cleins turn to return the favour as he ran the ball down the right and whipped the ball in which turned out to be a great shot and when the keeper could only parry the ball Jake downey was on hand to poke the ball home, so at the break the score was 2-0.

As i said to the boys at half time Fairview were not done and they came out and put us under extreme pressure, but as usual Keiran Hartnett was there and kept us in the match, however the pressure was to tell, and when from a great shot from their striker the ball bounced up and struck one of our defenders on the hand and a penalty was awarded. Up stepped the Fairview striker but unfortunately he blasted the ball just past the left hand post, so the 2-0 lead was still intact. This spured Fairview on and only the hardwork from our defence kept them out until the Fairview super sub came on, he might have been the smallest player on the pitch but he was everywhere, and with his sheer determination and skills he found himself clear in on goal, shot and when everyone thought the ball had gone out of play, he played to the whistle and smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

So Fairview were back in the match, however as they pushed up the break away goal was always on. Once again it was Jake Downey who did the damage from his superb running with ball, he beat three players and shot the ball ended up at the feet of Stephen Clein who tapped home, unfortunatley when the ball was struck he was in an offside position and the goal was ruled out, so the match ended up with a solid 2-1 win. Great performance and a special mention to David Ryan who playing out of postion didn't grab any of the glory but put in a man of the match display through his hard work and trieless effort, well done and well done to all the Corbally team.

u7's do well in Strong Blitz

A ten man turn out in Caherdavin due to communion brought sunshine and defeat for Corbally2 team. With some players missing Corbally struggled up against three very strong teams but put up a great fight. With losing to Shannon Hibs 3—0 Corbally made some changes against Caherdavin and improved their passing and got a late goal with Patrick Nathan scoring from the corner kick.Corbally keeper Steven English pulled off some great safes but Corbally was unlucky to loose 2—1.

A seven man Annacotty team came out fighting and were one up in less than five minutes but when Alex Ryan was taking down in the box Patrick Nathan stepped up to the penalty Spot and tapped home the equaliser.Annacotty went ahead but Corbally levelled the game before the final whistle blew. 2---2. [Man of the blitz was Adam Fitzgerald]. A very well done to all who turned out today, and congratulations to all who made their Communions from all at Corbally utd.

Hard earned Victory in the Sun

U10 Blue 1 v Mungret Regional 1

For the second week in a row, Corbally U10 Blue were decimated by withdrawls but were able to record a hard earned victory in glorious sunshine at Athlunkard last Sat afternoon.
The match started and both teams went at each other, the Corbally defence of Ian O'Loughlin, David Cullen and Aaron Maloney had to be on their toes on several occasions, with Shane Bourke vigilant behind them in the goal. On two occasions he had to dive at the feet of attackers to stop any danger. As the half wore on the Corbally midfield of Seamus Reddan, Rebecca Joyce and Liam O'Shanahan were able to get on top and we had several chances to open the score. Ben Murphy and Michael Davern were linking well up front but we could not get a good strike on target. Due to the heat, rolling subs was allowed and Scott Greaney was used as cover for several players.
HT :0-0
The second half opened and Corbally imposed their authority and were passing the ball very well. Several lovely passing moves ended with chances, Ben Murphy struck the woodwork on two occasions, Liam O'Shanahan had a couple of half chances but still the match was scoreless. Mungret forced a couple of good breaks and only calm defending from David Cullen and Ian O'Loughlin prevented a goal against. It was with some relief that Corbally scored when Ben Murphy forced the ball home after a good move.
Corbally started to produce some very neat football orchestrated by Scott Greaney, not to say that the other team members were not involved, all played a significant part and played in a very unselfish way. However, Mungret played their part in a fine game of football in tough conditions.
FT 1-0

Squad:Shane Bourke,Ian O'Loughlin,David Cullen,Aaron Maloney,Seamus Reddan,Rebecca Joyce,Liam O'Shanahan,Ben Murphy,Michael Davern,Scott Greaney.
